Composer Lara Poe began her musical career with piano. Around a year after beginning formal training, she began writing music and soon transitioned to the New England Conservatory Preparatory school, which was a notable influence throughout her childhood and teenage years. Her instructors there were Rodney Lister for composition and Melanie Almiron and Bertica Shulman-Cramer for piano.
Poe currently studies composition at Boston University with Joshua Fineberg. In fall 2013, she took her studies abroad to the Royal Collect of Music in London, England, where she studied composition with Kenneth Hesketh and piano with Edna Stern.
Other previous composition professors of Poe include Martin Amlin, Ketty Nez and Richard Cornell. Her current piano instructor is Linda Jiorle-Nagy, although she studied also studied with Sergey Schepkin while he was a visiting professor at Boston University.
Poe has been a finalist in the Morton Gould Young Composer Awards twice, and was a co-winner of the UMass Lowell Chapter, National Music Conference 2008 with her Small Orchestra Piece.
